The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving conditions for individuals with mental illness. NAMI advocates for access to services, treatment, supports and research. NAMI is committed to raising awareness and building a community of hope for all of those in need.
NAMI does a lot of work in advocacy for overcoming barriers to mental health treatment for underserved communities, especially effected by those of race and ethnicity. Cultural competency is a major factor in overcoming health disparity barriers as it can provide the community with levels of cultural education and awareness for providers and also for those seeking help. NAMI has done quite a bit of work in cultural competency throughout communities througout the country.
I am interested in working with efforts to improve health disparities faced within the realm of mental health care delivery. NAMI provides newsletters and consistent updates on policy and community actions related to their efforts in improving mental health care delivery.
